The mountain pass has played a key role in war, trade and migration well before the advent of recorded history. It most often presents itself as a traversable route – an easing or allowing of a journey from one point to another. Drekagil Pass aspires to expand this definition of the mountain pass by extending its amenity. The pass acts as an interface between two halves of the project’s whole and invites hikers to experience a compression of space within the vast planes of the Icelandic highlands. Variations in the qualities and the permeability of the interior facades create a relationship between the spa and hospitality programs of the project by adjusting views and access and providing opportunities for passive heating and cooling. The greenhouse and great room, open to one another along the pass, respectively anchor the distinct environments of the spa and residence and act as points of departure for the users of the project.
