Echo Point is the product of a short research study that was conducted by myself and four of my peers as a part of the Gensler Los Angeles summer internship program. In order to address downtown Los Angeles' infamous reputation of danger and nighttime desolation, we proposed a readily deployable street furniture-based design solution that serves a variety of purposes, but most importantly keeps downtown residents and tourists feeling connected to a sense of safety and comfort. Sites within the downtown core were selected for their proximity to emerging hubs of pedestrian activity and to one another, allowing for a relationship to exist between the various modules as a pedestrian travels along common routes. The solution is thus echoed throughout the downtown core as it takes advantage of neglected corners and niches, and the network of Echo Points is both simply established and easily identifiable as a network that promotes a safer and more livable downtown core for the City of Los Angeles.
