The Museum of the City draws its fundamental form from the positioning of several other nearby cultural landmarks. Sitting directly opposite the Aurelian Wall, the project transforms the present neglected park along Viale Carlo Felice into a cultural corridor. The slope of the piazza carries visitors from steet level at both ends to the entrance of the museum, a cafe, and a multi-use auditorium, with administrative and additional exhibition spaces floating overhead underneath the gently terraced public park above at street level. Multiple large staircases funnel people from the existing street corridors of Viale Carlo Felice to the piazza, cutting through and breaking up the form of the building. The museum exhibit spaces are divided into three permanent exhibits: Imago Hominis (The Image of Man), Forma Urbis (The Form of the City), and History and Mythology. There is an additional space for a temporary exhibit. A slim spinal volume consolidates the building’s various service spaces along its length, concealing these areas within a thickened, permeable wall. This allows for dramatic changes of atmosphere to exist on either side of the spine, one side being nestled next to the earth, and the other opening expansively to the public realm.
